CHICAGO – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team's last WAC trip to Chicago State ended with a five-set loss on Saturday. The Lopes took the first and fourth sets but ultimately fell to the Cougars, 26-24, 17-25, 15-25, 25-19 and 11-15.
The Lopes got out to an 11-6 lead after a six-point run, including back-to-back-to-back blocks by junior middle blocker

Klaire Mitchell. Chicago State fought its way back and closed in on the Lopes' lead with runs that led to a 23-23 tie. With set point on the line, sophomore outside hitter
Ashley Lifgren recorded her fourth kill and gave the Lopes the first-set victory.
Chicago State controlled the second set after an 18-10 start. The Lopes stopped the Cougars' momentum by going on a three-point run with back-to-back kills by freshman opposite hitter

Annabelle Kubinski. Chicago State managed to keep the Lopes at a distance and tied the match score at one set apiece.
The third set was all Cougars, as they took an 8-2 lead. GCU closed the gap after two kills from outside hitter

Katherine Schmitt. The Cougars pulled away to win the set and take a 2-1 match lead.
In a must-win fourth set, the Lopes got out to a 9-6 lead after a five-point run. GCU went on another five-point run, highlighted by two kills from Wise. The Cougars responded with a five-point run before a kill from Eskes and a service ace by libero
Teagan DeFalco started a 3-0 GCU run. Wise closed the set with a kill, forcing a fifth set.
The Cougars jumped ahead 5-2 in the final set, but GCU responded with four straight kills from Turri. Chicago State took the lead and kept it to win the set and the match.
The Lopes are back in action on Thursday, when they travel to New Mexico State for a 6 p.m. match.
