LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team won the opening set at first-place New Mexico State on Thursday night but wound up losing 25-18, 21-25, 21-25, 18-25, with a rematch staged for Saturday night at GCU Arena.
In front of 1,462 fans at Pan American Center, the Lopes got out to a 10-4 lead after junior setter
Klaire Mitchell found freshman outside hitter
McKenzie Wise for two kills and junior middle blocker
Annabelle Kubinski for another. Mitchell, who recorded 35 assists and 13 digs on Thursday night, also added the first service ace of the match in the Lopes' seven-point run. GCU went on another long stretch of points late in the set, highlighted by two Kubinski kills that closed the opening set. Kubinski finsihed the match with 14 kills on match-best .684 hitting.
GCU (11-4, 3-3 WAC) carried its momentum into the second set with a 3-0 lead after graduate libero
Teagan DeFalco found sophomore outside hitter
Giorgia Turri for the first point. New Mexico State (14-4, 5-1 WAC) responded with a six-point run that grabbed a 13-11 lead. GCU answered with four consecutive points to surge ahead 17-16 after Kubinski played the net well, knocking down an overpass and then combining with freshman
Sydney Reed to finish that point. A kill by junior middle blocker
Hannah Eskes gave the Lopes a 19-18 lead, but the Aggies won seven of the last 10 points of the set to even the match at 1-1.
After being tied 8-8 in the third set, the Aggies pulled away to an 18-11 lead before GCYU responded with a six-point run capped by another Kubinski/Reed combo block. The Aggies controlled the end of the set to move to a 2-1 match lead.
In the final set, the Aggies scored the first three points and led 17-11. GCU put together back-to-back points to tighten the New Mexico State lead to 22-18, but those were the last two points that the Lopes would score.
The Lopes and Aggies meet again at 6 p.m. Saturday in GCU Arena for Block Out Breast Cancer Night.
