NCAA acknowledges 5 teams among top in nation
Grand Canyon University received five Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA, which recognized Lopes men's and women's tennis, women's cross country, women's golf and women's volleyball with the honors.
The awards are given to teams with an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate that ranks in the top 10% of all teams in their respective sports, based on the most recent multi-year APRs following the 2018-19 academic year.
Â
"The APR is just one metric that represents our student-athletes' achievement in the classroom." GCU Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development Jason Linders said. "We are committed to developing them holistically and our coaches have done an excellent job of recruiting and developing growing leaders, alongside our faculty, Office of Student-Athlete Development staff and administration, who assists our student-athletes in achieving their goals, including their academic endeavors, as they prepare for life after sport."
Â
A total of 1,380 Division I teams from 326 universities received the NCAA Public Recognition Awards for the 2018-19 academic year. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.
Â
"Our APR numbers in all sports continue a positive trend and it is rewarding to see five of our teams' accomplishments being recognized nationally this year compared to two last year," Linders said.
Â
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the ongoing academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
