Grand Canyon opens a five-game slate of road action with a two-game series against nationally ranked Arkansas on Tuesday and Wednesday at Baum Walker Stadium in Fayetteville. The Lopes and Razorbacks meet up for the the first time since a doubleheader in 2017. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. (Phoenix time) on Tuesday and 1 p.m. (Phoenix time) on Wednesday.
Both games will stream live on SEC Network +.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- PITCHING THE STRENGTH: The Lopes pitching staff is off to an impressive start this season. Through 16 games, GCU ranks 47th in the nation with a staff ERA of 2.98. Additionally, the control has been stellar with the Lopes ranking 13th for fewest walks per nine innings (2.57) and 58th in WHIP (.22).
- TURNING DOUBLE PLAYS: A part of the pitching success for GCU has been the infielders' ability to turn double plays. After turning five double plays against Pacific over the weekend, the Lopes rank 12th nationally in double plays turned with 16.
- UNCOMMON OPPONENT: GCU does not meet up with the SEC often with only nine all-time meetings against current members. GCU has faced Arkansas and Tennessee in the past decade, with the most recent matchup coming against the Razorbacks on the road in 2017.
SCOUTING
After starting the season 7-0, Arkansas has gone 2-5 in its last seven games. Part of that seven-game stretch was an 0-3 showing at the highly touted Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston, where the event featured Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas, LSU and Missouri. Arkansas ranks 20th in the nation for batting average (.307), 16th in home runs (19) and 13th in slugging percentage (.495). Christian Franklin, Heston Kjerstad and Dominic Tamez are batting over .400 for Arkansas this year with Kjerstead belting a team-high six home runs. Over the weekend, it was a walk-off home run by Kjerstat that gave Arkansas the series win over South Alabama at home.
