SAN DIEGO – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team dropped a weekend road match at San Diego State on Saturday.
For the second straight match, the Lopes (2-9) started off strongly by taking the doubles point but were swept in singles for a 6-1 loss.
In doubles, the Lopes took the point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. Juniors
Autum Prudhomme and
Ludovica Infantino won 6-3 at the third court after senior
Emilia Occhipinti and junior
Martina Lo Pumo lost at No. 2. The point for GCU was clinched at No. 1 with a 6-3 win by freshman
Natasha Puehse and sophomore
Jana Weiss. The pair is 2-0 since moving to the top doubles position.
In singles, San Diego State (5-5) regained momentum by taking all six first sets. The Lopes were competitive in multiple matches, going to three sets at No. 1 with Occhipinti and No. 3 with Infantino. Both players bounced back after dropping their first sets but were unable to close out their matches with a win in the third set.
The Aztecs won four of the six singles matches in straight sets. Prudhomme was competitive at No. 6 in her second set, falling 7-5, while Lo Pumo lost the first set 6-4 at No. 5.
The Lopes will be back in action at the GCU Tennis Facility for a Friday matchup against Marquette at 3 p.m.
