Grand Canyon finished the regular season on an upswing, holding a lead for the entire second half to defeat CSU Bakersfield 64-61 at GCU Arena.
The Lopes' seniors lived up to the title of Senior Night with GCU swingman
Carlos Johnson scoring 33 points, two shy of his career high, and power forward
Lorenzo Jenkins grabbing 10 rebounds, matching his career high, in their final home game.
Senior Night began appropriately with Johnson hanging his uniform on Bakersfield in the first half, when he scored 23 of the Lopes' points for a 33-27 edge. Johnson was aggressive from the outset, scoring 12 points to help GCU run out to a 17-4 lead as it held the Roadrunners scoreless for more than six minutes.
Johnson made 7 of 11 first-half shots to nearly match what CSU Bakersfield did in the half offensively. The Roadrunners missed 11 of their first 12 shots but went on an 8-0 run to get back in the game.
GCU kept the lead for all of the second half and was ahead 60-50 with 2:17 to go before Bakersfield made a late rally. Johnson scored his final points on a transition pull-up for a 62-56 lead but Bakersfield pulled within three, 62-59, with 45 seconds to go on a Justin Edler-Davis 3-pinter.
Lopes freshman point guard
Jovan Blacksher Jr. closed out the score with two free throws and ball ended in the hands of Jenkins off an inbound steal at the buzzer, when he threw the ball into the air to celebrate GCU finishing at 8-8 in WAC play. The Lopes will be either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed, depending on the California Baptist-UT Rio Grande Valley outcome.
