EDINBURG, Texas — The Grand Canyon women's basketball team fell to UT Rio Grande Valley 66-47 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
The Lopes (15-11, 10-5 WAC) fell behind 40-13 in the second quarter and put together a furious rally to come within 10 points in the third, only to be outscored 14-8 in the final period.
Freshman guard
Tavia Rowell made three 3-pointers to lead the Lopes with 15 points, while senior power forward
Da'jah Daniel just missed a double-double with 10 rebounds and eight points.
The Vaqueros (13-15, 8-7 WAC) were led by Desirea Buerge with 15 points.
GCU was outscored 21-11 in each of the first two periods. The Lopes trailed by 27 in the second quarter before making a 9-0 run shortly before halftime with Rowell scoring seven of the points. GCU the lead to 49-39 in the third quarter when freshman point guard

The Lopes are back in action Saturday when they travel to CSU Bakersfield for the regular-season finale.
GCU remains in second place in the WAC, trailing conference leader Kansas City (11-3) by 1 1/2 games and holding a half-game lead on third-place Utah Valley (9-5). The Saturday loss marked GCU's first consecutive losses since Dec. 29 and Jan. 4.
