BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Grand Canyon women's basketball team fell to CSU Bakersfield 49-41 on the road Saturday.
The loss assures the Lopes of the No. 3 seed in the WAC Tournament, beginning on Wednesday. GCU will get a rematch against the sixth-seeded Roadrunners at 8:30 p.m. in Orleans Arena. CSU Bakersfield won both regular-season meetings between the teams (CSU Bakersfield also won 59-54 on Jan. 4).
GCU was led by WAC Freshman of the Year candidate
Jada Holland, who scored a game-high 13 points and added four assists. Lopes senior
Da'jah Daniel added nine rebounds and secured the WAC rebounding title (all games) after entering the game ranked 26th in the nation.
The Lopes (15-12, 10-6 WAC) kept the Roadrunners scoreless for the first 5:27 of the game and went the first 8:55 without allowing a field goal. The Lopes led 10-5 after the first 10 minutes of action. GCU committed a total of 16 first-half turnovers, while holding CSU Bakersfield to 13.3% shooting from the field to lead 17-15 at the halftime break.
CSU Bakersfield took its first lead at 28-27 after an Andie Easley 3-pointer at the 2:03 mark in the third period.
The Roadrunners took a 38-34 lead with 6:01 remaining after another 3-pointer. They extended the lead to 45-37 at the 3:08 mark and held the Lopes off the rest of the way.
GCU held a 33-28 advantage on the boards, but the Lopes' 27 turnovers proved to be the difference.
GCU will look to add to its eight-win improvement from last season at the WAC Tournament.
