Grand Canyon kept its late-season momentum by winning for the seventh time in the past nine games with a 71-47 blowout victory against Chicago State on Saturday night in GCU Arena.
The Lopes (12-13, 7-4 WAC) closed the first half on a 12-2 run to open up a 34-18 halftime lead and withstood one second-half challenge before pulling away for their largest winning margin of the season. By keeping Chicago State to 40.9% shooting, GCU remained in the WAC Tournament No. 2 seed position with its final regular-season trip coming next week at Utah Valley and Seattle U.
The Lopes held Chicago State to 46 points on its visit last season and the Cougars did not pass that total Saturday night until its final possession. GCU applied full-court pressure to rattle or delay the Chicago State offense, which committed 18 turnovers to feed 13 GCU fastbreak points.
GCU shot 49.1% from the field with four scorers in double figures, led by junior center
Alessandro Lever's 15 points with six rebounds. Lopes freshman point guard
Jovan Blacksher Jr. added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists while junior guard
Mikey Dixon made 5 of 7 shots fo 13 points.
The Lopes made only eight turnovers for the third time in the past four games and thrived when they were patient offensively to get the ball into the paint, where they outscored the Cougars 36-16. When they were not finishing chances in the lane, they were drawing fouls for another 14 points on free throws.
