Holland tallies 15 points in 4th quarter at UMKC
KANSAS CITY — The Grand Canyon women's basketball team moved into sole possession of first place in the WAC with a thrilling 62-56 win at Kansas City on Thursday night.
The Lopes (13-8, 8-2 WAC) won their sixth consecutive game by outscoring the former conference leaders 21-7 in the final quarter, after the Roos (15-10, 8-3 WAC) outscored GCU in each of the first three quarters.
Lopes freshman point guard Jada Holland put the Lopes on her back, scoring 15 of her 18 points during the fourth-quarter blitz. Holland made 4 of 5 shots from 3-point range.
GCU trailed 49-41 to start the final quarter but Holland started the scoring with a 3-pointer, setting the tone for the Lopes.
After a Venla Varis 3-pointer at the 8:23 mark, the Lopes tied the game at 49-49. Kansas City led 56-51 with 4:57 remaining, only to get shut out the rest of the way by the stout GCU defense.
As Holland scored 12 consecutive Lopes points, GCU went on an 11-0 run to finish the game. The run included Holland drawing an offensive foul and hitting a pair of 3-pointers.
Lopes senior Da'jah Daniel just missed a double-double with nine points, a game-high 14 rebounds and three blocked shots. GCU freshman guard Tavia Rowell added nine points and freshman post Mae Bryant added seven points and six rebounds.
GCU is back in action on Saturday at Chicago State.
