GCU improves to 9-2 in WAC with road win
CHICAGO ‑ The Grand Canyon women's basketball team captured its seventh straight victory with a 68-57 triumph at Chicago State on Saturday.
The Lopes (14-8, 9-2 WAC) kept sole possession of first place in the conference by opening the fourth quarter with a 13-4 run that gave GCU a 59-44 lead with 5:35 to go. Lopes freshman point guard Jada Holland scored nine consecutive GCU points during the run as part of her second consecutive 15-point fourth quarter.
Holland made 9 of 13 shots, including 2-for-2 shooting on 3-pointers, to score a season-high 26 points. She also added eight rebounds and six assists without a turnover while playing all 40 minutes.
"Anytime you can get a win on the road during conference late in the season it's great," Lopes head coach Nicole Powell said. "I'm proud of the kids for just digging in and playing hard down the stretch. We are happy to come back to Phoenix and look to keep on rolling."
GCU senior Da'jah Daniel, a power forward, also played the entire game and added 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting with a team-high nine rebounds and two blocked shots.
Lopes sophomore guards Venla Varis and Laura Piera each added nine points to help GCU win its fifth consecutive road game.
Chicago State (1-24, 1-11 WAC) led 17-15 after the first quarter. The Lopes took a 35-28 halftime lead with a 20-11 second quarter.
GCU shot 46.3% from the field and held CSU to 42.9% while winning the rebounding battle 31-28, holding a 36-26 edge in points in the paint and proving deeper with a 12-0 advantage in bench points.
The Lopes are back in action next week when it hosts Seattle U on Thursday night in GCU Arena.
