LAS VEGAS — Grand Canyon needed to slow down Colorado to have a chance to win and succeeded for only so long before the Buffaloes offense picked up and outlasted the Lopes' fight for a 74-64 win Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena.
Colorado (6-1), a team that had won its past three games by an average of 33.7 points, showed its experience by shaking off a 27-27 first half with a 47-point second half on 61.5% shooting from the field.
GCU became the first team to outrebound Colorado, dominating the boards 33-20, and the first team to shoot at least 50% (50.9%) against the No. 11 scoring defense in the nation.
GCU was trailing 57-48 but put together an 11-3 run to take the Colorado lead down to 60-59 with 5:11 remaining on a fastbreak layup by senior
Sean Miller-Moore, who played a strong all-around game with 12 points, five assists and four rebounds.
Colorado answered with a 10-0 run that put away the Lopes with the Buffaloes' two-time All-Pac-12 guard, McKinley Wright IV, hitting clutch shots to polish off a 21-point, seven-assist night. GCU made three of its 17 turnovers during that critical run.
GCU was led by senior center Asbjørn Midtgaard, who went 8 for 9 from the field after having a 9-for-11 game Sunday against San Francisco. He finished with 16 points and nine rebounds and freshman point guard
Jovan Blacksher Jr. scored a team-high 17 points.
The Lopes (4-3) established the type of game they wanted it to be in the first half, slowing down a Colorado team that had averaged 88 points in its previous three blowout wins, including a 92-69 rout of Washington here on Sunday.
GCU trailed early with four early turnovers, but kept to working the shot clock to avoid the Buffaloes' dangerous transition game. As the Lopes scored in the paint and on second chances, they took a 15-14 lead on a 3-pointer by freshman guard
Jayden Stone on a kickout pass from senior center Midtgaard.
Colorado took a 27-21 lead but GCU, as it has done continuously this season, had a late first-half response. The Lopes shut out the Buffaloes for the final five minutes and got back into the paint for a Midtgaard post-up, Blacksher floater and two

After a difficult four-game gauntlet of games, the Lopes return to GCU Arena next week for a back-to-back set against Denver on Dec. 29 and Bethesda (Calif.) on Dec. 30.
