Lewis, men's team win 5K virtual race

Top 5 GCU runners record personal-best times
The Grand Canyon men's cross country team won a virtual 5K meet Saturday against Wayland Baptist and New Mexico State with Lopes sophomore Jacob Lewis finishing first overall.
The virtual race was organized by GCU head coach Sara Slattery and the other teams' coaches in hopes of promoting competition after the cross country season was postponed because of COVID-19.Â
The race was designed so that each team would run on its own locally and report scores with any altitude adjustments necessary to level the playing field. Each team sent in the top five racers' times, which were factored like a normal cross country meet to determine a winning team and overall placement.

GCU men's team recorded five personal bests from Lewis (14 minutes, 35 seconds), junior Blake Bennett (14:59.0), freshman Cannon Angotti (15:01.0), junior Landon Rast (15:24.0) and freshman Luke Wentz (15:48.0). Lewis's time was five seconds off the current GCU record for a 5K despite being his first attempt at that distance.
Wayland Baptist placed second on the men's side, ahead of NMSU. UNLV competed with only individual entrants.
GCU did not enter enough runners to compile a team's score for the women's competition, but senior McKayla Cordova placed eighth and freshman teammate Halle Jenkins finished 11th. NMSU won with Wayland Baptist in second place and UNLV in third.Â
