Midtgaard sets career high again; Lopes move to 2-0
By: Paul Coro
Grand Canyon opened the season impressively on defense and turned its attention to the offense Saturday night, blitzing Benedictine Mesa 94-63 after scoring more first-half points than it posted in any half last season.
Lopes senior center Asbjørn Midtgaard followed a career rebounding high (15) on Wednesday with a career scoring high less than 13 minutes into the game Saturday. With deep post-ups and transition scores, Midtgaard made 8 of 9 shots for 16 first-half points as GCU pulled away from its crosstown NAIA visitor for a 51-34 lead.
Midtgaard finished with 20 points and eight rebounds in only 20 minutes because the Lopes' second unit was able to expand the lead in the second half. Once sophomore point guard Jovan Blacksher Jr. picked up a fourth foul early in the second half, freshman Chance McMillian made the most of an expanded chance and scored 11 points in 23 minutes.
GCU took its largest lead at 84-51 with 7:16 to play, when McMillian hit a corner 3 off freshman guard Jayden Stone's assist.
Lopes senior power forward Alessandro Lever followed up his 18-point season opener with a 12-point, five-assist game in only 20 minutes.
Even with Blacksher playing only 12 minutes, GCU shot 57.4% from the field and used its dominant size to outscore Benedictine 56-14 in the paint. After outrebounding Grambling 48-30 on Wednesday, the Lopes won the glass 44-24 on Saturday with seven rebounds from sophomore power forward Gabe McGlothan in 19 minutes.
The Lopes kept their opponent to less than 40% shooting for the second consecutive game with Benedictine shooting 34.6%. Austin Denham led the Redhawks with 20 points.
