The Grand Canyon women's basketball team topped UT Rio Grande Valley 62-60 in overtime on Thursday night in GCU Arena.
The Lopes trailed by as many as eight points in the third quarter but chipped away to force overtime and secure the victory on a pair of free throws by freshman forward
Mae Bryant with 1.1 seconds remaining.
"I thought we dug in, down six at halftime and had a good third quarter," GCU head coach
Nicole Powell said. "I'm proud of the way we fought. We gave up a lot of lay ups and fouls in the first half, but we tightened it up defensively."
GCU trailed 32-26 at the break as the Lopes shot just 36% from the field.
"In the second half we just made good plays," Powell said. "(Freshman guard Jada) Holland making that shot and taking a charge, (sophomore guard)
Laura Piera made some critical blocks defensively, Mae made the big free-throws at the end, Da'jah (Daniel) got some big rebounds and Venla (Varis) and Tavia (Rowell) made some big shots. Overall it was a great team effort. We will enjoy it tonight but tomorrow we focus on New Mexico State."
With the win, GCU improves to 10-8 and 5-2 in WAC play, while UTRGV drops to 8-12 and 3-4 in conference. The Lopes move into a tie for first-place with Kansas City and Saturday's opponent, New Mexico State.
Piera led the Lopes with 13 points and six assists, but the sophomore point guard fouled out with 1:59 remaining in overtime and the Lopes ahead 60-58.
UTRGVÂ scored at the 1:15 mark and the teams remained tied. With just five seconds left, the Vaqueros drew a shooting foul but missed a pair of free throws in an attempt to take the lead.
The Lopes called a timeout and advanced the ball to inbound with four seconds left. Bryant caught the ball near the foul line and drove the lane, drawing a shooting foul with 1.1 left on the clock. The freshman sank both free throws for the 62-60 lead.
UTRGV was out of timeouts and inbounded a pass to midcourt but the half court heave was short and the Lopes secured the win.
Bryant finished with 10 points and six rebounds, while Daniel just missed a double-double with nine points and a season-high 14 rebounds.
Holland finished with nine points and five assists. Rowell and Varis each hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Lopes.
UTRGV was led by Zhane Templeton with 12 points and Trelynn Tyler with 10 points.
GCU is back in action on Saturday when it hosts New Mexico State in GCU Arena.
