The Grand Canyon men's volleyball team returns home to take on Benedictine on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Antelope Gymnasium. The Lopes are coming off a 3-0 weekend at the Lindenwood Invitational, looking to continue a five-match win streak.
The match will be streamed live on the GCU TV.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- PUTTING UP STATS: The Lopes rank in the top 10 nationally in five categories. GCU ranks eighth in kills per set at 12.95 and ninth in aces per set (1.9), digs per set (12.0) and team attacks per set (28.2). The Lopes also rank 10th nationally in assists per set at 12.0. Two GCU student-athletes hold top-10 rankings: sophomore outside hitter Christian Janke ranks seventh in aces per set a 0.7 and freshman outside hitter Camden Gianni ranks eighth in attacks per set at 8.94.
- WINNING WERLE: Head coach Matt Werle became the winningest coach in program history on Jan. 17 with a win over Park. The fifth-year coach passed former head coach Jeremy Price, who previously held the record with 68 wins
- SETTING RECORDS: Junior middle blocker Ian McLain tied the GCU individual match record for hitting percentage on Jan. 18 in a win over UC San Diego. McLain hit .857 to help the Lopes to a 3-1 win over the Tritons.
SCOUTING
Benedictine opened the season with a three-match losing streak at the UC Santa Barbara Asics Invitational, falling to Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara and CSU Northridge. The Redhawks earned their first win of the season at home against Park in five sets. At the River Crossing Challenge in Canton, Missouri, Benedictine split with a win over Culver-Stockton and a loss to Grand View. In their last road match, the Redhawks lost to Quincy 3-0.The Redhawks are led by freshman outside hitter Landon Fuller, who has recorded 57 kills this season to average 2.5 per set.
GCU is 4-0 in the series against Benedictine, having won the last match 3-2 on Jan. 11, 2019.
LAST TIME OUT
- GCU took down Quincy 3-0 to become co-champions at the Lindenwood Invitational.
WHAT'S NEXT
- The Lopes continue their homestand against No. 9 Stanford on Saturday in Antelope Gym. The match serves as the conference opener for GCU and begins at 6 p.m.
