The Grand Canyon men's volleyball team travels to St. Charles, Missouri, this weekend to take part in the Lindenwood Invitational. The Lopes take on three Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association teams in McKendree, Lindenwood and Quincy.
All three matches will be broadcast live on the GLVC Sports Network.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- PUTTING UP STATS: The Lopes rank in the top 10 nationally in four categories. GCU ranks seventh in team aces per set at 2.06 and kills per set at 12.88. The Lopes also rank ninth in hitting percentage at .314 and assists per set at 11.75. Individually, sophomore outside hitter Christian Janke ranks second nationally in aces per set, averaging 0.87.
- WINNING WERLE: Head coach Matt Werle became the winningest coach in program history last weekend with a win over Park. The fifth-year coach passed former head coach Jeremy Price, who previously held the record with 68 wins.
- SETTING RECORDS: Junior middle blocker Ian McLain tied the GCU individual match record for hitting percentage last weekend in a win over UC San Diego. McLain hit .857 to help the Lopes to a 3-1 win over the Tritons.
SCOUTING
MCKENDREE opened the season 1-2 at the UCSB Asics Invitational, defeating CSU Northridge but falling to Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara. The Bearcats won home matches last weekend versus NJIT and Saint Francis. McKendree is led by senior opposite hitter Zach Schnittker, who is averaging 2.58 kills per set with a .165 hitting percentage.LINDENWOOD hosts the Lindenwood Invitational this weekend after playing their first four matches at home. The Lions earned wins over Lincoln Memorial and Saint Francis, but lost to Mount Olive in their season opener and NJIT in their last match. Freshman outside hitter AJ Lewis leads the Lions with 43 kills this season. Lindenwood is set to play against UC San Diego and Lees-McRae before taking on the Lopes.
QUINCY is 1-4 this season with losses to Mount Olive, Lincoln Memorial and Missouri Baptist. The Hawks first win came at the River Crossing Tournament in a straight-set match against Benedictine. Quincy is led by senior opposite Omari Wheeler, who is averaging 3.47 kills per set. The Hawks will play two matches at the Lindenwood Invitational before facing the Lopes against UC San Diego and Lees-McRae.
LAST TIME OUT
- GCU went 2-0 last weekend in its first home matches of the season.
- The Lopes took down Park in three sets during their home opener in Antelope Gymnasium, giving Werle his 69th win to set the program record.
- McLain led the Lopes to a four-set win over UC San Diego on Saturday at GCU Arena.

- The Lopes return home to take on Benedictine on Wednesday in Antelope Gymnasium.
