MORAGA, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's soccer team tested No. 8 Saint Mary's on the road Friday but the Lopes fell 1-0 with a penalty-kick goal in the Gaels' lowest-scoring output since Oct. 28, 2018.
"We played a very good team on the road," GCU head coach
Schellas Hyndman said. "They haven't lost a home game since September 16, 2016. They're a good team. They're very technical and they had 10 of their 11 players that started last year back. I thought we fought extremely hard. Getting called for a PK with two and a half minutes into the second half and getting a red card at the same time and then we fought so well. I hate to think how good this team could be. They played so well and with so much courage. It was a disappointing ending, but if we didn't fight, it could've been embarrassing."
The Lopes (1-1) and Gaels (3-0) stayed tight on defense through a scoreless first half. GCU's strong defensive back four of sophomore
Esai Easley, junior
Nick Barreiro and seniors
Marlon Atondo, and
Austin Day limited chances for Saint Mary's to shoot throughout the first 45 minutes.
Atondo took the first shot of the game in the 13th minute, sending the ball off the right woodwork. Saint Mary's answered with the only shot on goal from either team in the first half, giving redshirt sophomore
George Tasouris his first save of the game. The Gaels outshot the Lopes by one in the first half, taking four shots to the Lopes' three and placing one on goal. Each team recorded one corner kick in the first 45.
Saint Mary's put the first goal on the board with a penalty kick in the 49th minute after a red card on Barreiro. Tasouris bounced back in goal, getting a save only seven minutes later. Both teams stepped up on offense in the second half, with GCU taking five shots with three on goal and the Gaels firing 10 shots with four on goal.
The Lopes had back-to-back opportunities to score with two corner kicks in the 67th and 68th minutes but were unable to make a scoring play. Tasouris recorded his fourth save in the 78th minute, holding the Saint Mary's lead to one to close out the match.
GCU returns to action on Sunday, when the Lopes visit Santa Clara at 7:30 p.m. (Phoenix time).
