Elizabeth Balsan was named WAC Cross Country Female Athlete of the Week after claiming the Cactus Open individual title in the first meet of the season on Saturday.
Balsan finished first out of 31 runners in a field that featured GCU, Arizona and Arizona State in Tucson. Her mark of 15 minutes, 57.3 seconds set the bar for a 2.7-mile course that was being used competitively for the first time.
The Anchorage, Alaska, native paced a GCU women's team that finished second among the three teams. Balsan led the Lopes in the first meet of 2019 after posting team-best marks at the Santa Clara Bronco Invite, the WAC Championships and the NCAA West Regional as a junior in 2018.
The Lopes head back to Tucson in two weeks for the Dave Murray Invitational on Sept. 13.
