Lopes honored as top-performing athletic department academically
Grand Canyon repeated as the winner of the WAC Academic Excellence Award, which honors the conference's top-performing athletic department in the classroom.
"GCU is honored to again receive the WAC Academic Excellence Award," GCU Interim Vice President of Athletics Jamie Boggs said. "This recognition shows our University's commitment to academic excellence and the success of our student-athletes in the classroom. An award like this is a testament to the hard work and efforts of the student-athletes, coaches, administration and the University as a whole."
The 2018-19 award was determined by a point system and presented to the institution that performed the best in the following areas: the cumulative grade point average of all undergraduate student-athletes, the cumulative GPA of the undergraduate student body in comparison to the cumulative GPA of an institution's student-athletes and the most recent two-year average of institutional Academic Progress Rate scores.
"We want to recognize the hard work and dedication our student-athletes exhibit every year as full-time students, champions in competition, and as future leaders," Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development, Jason Linders said. "We continue to be encouraged to see the programming, support and culture we have in place here contributing to their continued success both in the classroom and on the field of competition. It is equally important that we recognize those who support our student-athletes off of the field, including our faculty, coaches, administration and support staff."
GCU was impressive across the board, as 21 Lopes teams posted a cumulative 3.44 GPA that was 0.35 higher than the average GCU undergraduate student.Â
"The academic metrics the NCAA uses are just one measure of student-athlete success here at GCU, but we want to provide the best possible student-athlete experience and prepare our young people to be future leaders in their respective community," Linders said.
