Lopes land conference-high 101 student-athletes on prestigious list

Grand Canyon student-athletes led Academic All-WAC with 101 honorees for spring sports, freshmen and transfers, the conference announced Tuesday.
Spring honors included baseball, softball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's outdoor track and field, as well as freshmen and transfers from fall and winter sports.
GCU had 24 more honorees than the next closest program, Utah Valley with 77.
To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests.
During the 2018-19 academic year, a total of 1,296 student-athletes earned Academic All-WAC recognition. GCU led the way with 239 honorees, while Utah Valley had 204. More than half – 59 percent – of all the WAC student-athletes that earned All-WAC recognition were also selected as Academic All-WAC honorees. Eight sports – men's cross country (71 percent), women's cross country (93 percent), women's soccer (77 percent), volleyball (86 percent), men's golf (70 percent), women's golf (100 percent), men's tennis (88 percent) and women's tennis (100 percent) had more than 70 percent of the All-WAC honorees who were also named Academic All-WAC.
