Grand Canyon begins a four-game road trip to close out its regular-season schedule beginning with the final midweek game at UC Riverside on Tuesday night.
The Lopes have won 14 of their past 16 games to go a season-high 11 games over .500, matching last year's high-water mark.
First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6 p.m. with the game streaming on Big West TV.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- POWER PLAY: The Lopes continue their power display in 2019, hitting five more home runs over the weekend. GCU has hit 52 this season, the most since 1999 (60). Sophomore Cuba Bess leads with 11, tying Chad De La Guerra for the most by a Lope since GCU's return to Division I in 2014. The Lopes rank third in the nation with 126 doubles while also ranking in the top 30 for slugging percentage (.462), the highest mark since 2007 (.463).
- PERSISTENT PAVLICA: Senior outfielder Preston Pavlica has reached base in 24 consecutive games. It's the longest streak for a GCU player since Pavlica reached safely in 26 straight games (24 to end 2018, two to start 2019). Pavlica is hitting .322 over the course of the streak.
- POSTSEASON PICTURE: While Tuesday's nonconference game has no impact on WAC standings, the hotly contested conference remains notable. Including GCU, five teams have the regular-season conference title within their grasps. New Mexico State is atop the WAC, while GCU and California Baptist have pulled within one game of first place. UT Rio Grande Valley and Sacramento State are tied for third, two games back of first.
SCOUTING
UC Riverside snapped a five-game losing streak with a win in the series finale against Cal State Fullerton on Sunday. With a 6-12 record in Big West play, the Highlanders rank eighth of nine in the standings.
The Highlanders' 6.76 team ERA and .953 fielding percentage are both bottom-50 marks nationally. Junior first baseman Connor Cannon is tied for 19th nationally with 16 home runs on the year.
GCU and UCR last met following the second weekend of the season. The Lopes went down 4-0 early and were left searching for a breakthrough hit, stranding 10 runners on base in a 5-3 loss. If last season is any indication, the Lopes fell to the Highlanders in an early-season matchup before recovering to defeat UC Riverside late in the season.
