Lopes fall to No. 2 USC, No. 7 Cal Poly

Grand Canyon beach volleyball dropped two tough matches in Los Angeles on Thursday. The No. 15 Lopes (19-10) fell to No. 2 USC and No. 7 Cal Poly on Friday with sophomore Taylor Jarzombek and freshman Esmee Priem managing to pick up Court 5 wins for GCU against both top-10 teams.

Vs. USC
The Lopes fell 4-1 to No. 2 USC (23-4) in their first match of the day. Freshman Katie Hess and junior Hannah Towne pushed the first finish of the day to three sets on Court 3, eventually falling 21-23, 21-14, 15-10. Jarzombek and Priem evened the score with a 19-21, 21-9, 16-14 win on Court 5 win.

Sophomore Bella Bauman and junior Jessica Stansfield took the loss on Court 2, falling to the Trojans 21-15, 21-13. USC secured the win with a Court 4 win over senior Jamie Walsh and freshman Anaya Evans, 21-16, 21-15. Redshirt freshman Teagan DeFalco and senior Mikaela Raudsepp fell on Court 1, 21-10, 21-13.

Vs. Cal Poly
No. 7 Cal Poly (20-9) defeated GCU 3-2 in the Lopes' second match of the day. Jarzombek and Priem got the Lopes started off with a win over the Mustangs on Court 5, taking down their opponents 21-15, 21-16. Hess and Towne battled to three sets and extra points on Court 3, but fell 21-16, 19-21, 22-20. The Mustangs took the lead as they took Court 2 over Bauman and Stansfield, who fell 21-13, 21-14.

The Mustangs secured the match with a close win on Court 1, defeating DeFalco and Raudsepp 22-20, 21-18. Evans and Walsh picked up the Lopes' second win of the match on Court 4 by rallying to a 15-21, 21-18, 15-11 victory.
