RENO, Nev. — Grand Canyon reeled off seven late runs to back up sophomore
Nick Hull's quality start as the Lopes topped Nevada 8-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
Hull's best career outing featured five shutout innings, scattering three hits and striking out five. He exited after 67 pitches with a 1-0 lead.
In combination with a March 6 outing against the Wolf Pack, Hull finished with 7 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball against Nevada.
"It built confidence," Hull said of his last outing against Nevada. "Knowing that they didn't hit me the first time, what's going to stop me from doing that again?"
In the seventh inning, however, GCU's shutout bid and lead were gone with one swing of the bat. Nevada sophomore third baseman Joshua Zamora hit a two-out, two-run home run to left field to give the Wolf Pack a 2-1 lead.
The Lopes ensured that Nevada's lead would be short-lived with a five-run response in the following half inning.
"It was good to see us answer back," GCU head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "They scored the two and that was a little deflating, but it was a great answer back. Knowing we still have at bats in front of us, so don't panic. The guys did a great job of stringing some nice at bats together to get runners in scoring position. That's where we've got to live."
Arguably the biggest Lopes at bat of the day came from freshman
C.J. Schauwecker in a pinch-hit appearance. His one-out single through the right side ignited a five-run, five-hit inning that saw GCU bat around the lineup.
Senior designated hitter
Pikai Winchester provided the go-ahead hit, doubling in a pair of runs to put the Lopes back in front 3-2. Junior right fielder
Quin Cotton made it back-to-back doubles to push across another run, while junior left fielder
Kona Quiggle capped the scoring with his team-leading sixth home run of the season.
"You never think our team is going to be out of it," Hull said. "When we were up just 1-0, I wasn't too worried. I knew we were going to score later."
Sophomore
Coen Wynne had the important job of following GCU's offensive outburst with a strong relief outing. Wynne retired all six batters he faced to finish off the victory.
The Lopes tacked on late insurance with a pair of runs in the ninth. Freshman catcher
Seth Beckstead opened the frame with his first career hit. Cotton tripled for his second extra-base hit of the day before scoring on a passed ball.
GCU finished a two-game sweep of the home-and-home season series with Nevada and improved to 5-1 in its past six games against Mountain West competition.
Cotton finished with three hits on the afternoon while Winchester, Quiggle and sophomore first baseman
Cuba Bess contributed two hits apiece. Both of Bess' hits were doubles, one of which scored Quiggle to put the Lopes on the board in the second inning.
Sophomore pitcher
Frankie Scalzo allowed a pair of runs in his two-inning outing but picked up his second win of the season after GCU's five-run eighth.
The Lopes resume WAC play when they take on Utah Valley in a three-game series set to get underway at 6 p.m. (Phoenix time) on Friday.
