A pair of former WAC adversaries meet up for the first time since 1998 when Grand Canyon welcomes Utah for a single game on Monday afternoon at GCU Ballpark.
The Lopes and Utes shared a home in the WAC from 1995 to 1998 with GCU edging Utah 13-11 in conference action. The historical WAC battles are just a small piece of a much larger series history between the two programs that has been contested 63 times and dates back to 1961.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- FLASHING POWER: Aided by a four-home run effort on Saturday, GCU continues to hit home runs at a torrid pace. Should the Lopes' rate of 0.89 home runs continue, GCU would eclipse the 50-homer mark for the first time since 2001. The Lopes are already closing in on last season's total of 25 home runs. Sophomore Cuba Bess leads GCU with five homers.
 - ABOUT TO GET REAL: Monday's matineé represents the final game before conference play begins for GCU. The Lopes are set to face upstart California Baptist for a three-game series at Brazell Field this weekend. Again having faced a challenging schedule, GCU is looking to post a .500-or-better record entering conference play for the first time since 2016.
 - DOUBLE DOWN: Junior outfielder Kona Quiggle has nine doubles this season, surpassing his two-year career total of seven doubles prior to 2019. Quiggle is tied for 13th nationally with his doubles mark. Quin Cotton led GCU with 19 doubles a season ago.
SCOUTING
The Utes also enter Monday's matchup one game under .500 for the season. Utah's seven wins on the season have come against seven different opponents including Nevada, San Diego and UNLV.
Utah won the 2016 Pac-12 regular season title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, but the Utes are just 24-39 in Pac-12 play since that season. On Utah's schedule, Monday's game vs. GCU is sandwiched in between a pair of Pac-12 series against opponents that the Lopes will also play. Utah just played Arizona and is next set to visit Stanford.
In recent action, Utah blew the doors off Arizona in the series opener, but went on to fall in the three-game series in Tucson to open Pac-12 play last weekend.
Last time the teams met over 20 years ago, GCU took three out of five games in a WAC series spanning April 23-26, 1998. GCU won the middle three games of the series by the narrowest of margins, winning 11-9, 10-9 and 15-14. The Utes claimed the opener and the finale 11-6 and 21-4. The Lopes held a 13-11 series edge in WAC matchups between the programs.
The Utes have a trio of players hitting over .360 on the season: senior outfielder Erick Migueles (.379), sophomore infielder Rykker Tom (.377) and junior infielder Oliver Dunn (.362).

Conference play begins with the Lopes hosting California Baptist, a first-year Division I program, for a three-game series beginning on Friday at GCU Ballpark.Â
