Grand Canyon beach volleyball announced a recruiting class of five signees, four of whom will join the program for the 2021 season and one who will join the Lopes for this spring season.
"This 2020 class is a special group of athletes," GCU head coach Kristen Rohr said. "They all can play at an extremely high level and understand what it means to work hard."
The five incoming Lopes include Krista Rowan, Alyssa Garber, Allison Hansen, Allanis Navas and Madison Banter.
KRISTA ROWAN | ARIZONA COLLEGE PREP | Chandler, Ariz.
"We are really excited to add Krista to our GCU family," Rohr said. "She is a big blocker with a superior work ethic and is very coachable. She is athletic with good ball control and we are expecting great things from her."
Hailing from Chandler, Arizona, Rowan competed for the beach and indoor volleyball team at Arizona College Prep. As a freshman, she was named to the all-region first team for indoor volleyball. In 2017, she made all-district beach volleyball first team and all-region first team for indoor. As a junior, Rowan was named to the all-district beach volleyball first team. As an indoor season captain, she was named Player of the Year in the region and led her team to a state runner-up finish. In her senior season, she was a state runner-up in beach volleyball while being named to the all-district first team and the top 10 Arizona volleyball players to watch.
She plans to major in Sports Marketing and Management.
ALYSSA GARBER | DESERT MOUNTAIN HS | Scottsdale, Ariz.
"Alyssa is a fast, athletic defender who has a immense passion for beach volleyball," Rohr said. "She is a hard worker who gives her all to becoming a better player. We are excited for her future at GCU."
Garber, from Scottsdale, Arizona, played one season of high school volleyball as a starter at Desert Mountain High. She also plays for RPM Sand and placed first in the AAU Fall Qualifier in October. Garber has several top-five finishes in AAU and AVP tournaments, including AVP America in January 2019 with GCU freshman
Alina Randall.
She intends to major in Exercise Science.
ALLISON HANSEN | KING'S HS | Everett, Wash.
"Alli Hansen is one of the top high school players joining GCU beach volleyball in the 2021 season," Rohr said. "We are really happy with the progress she has made over the last couple years and have extremely high expectations for Alli. We believe she will make an immediate positive impact on our program."
The Washington native competes for King's High School on the indoor volleyball team as a middle blocker and outside hitter. As a freshman, she was named to the all-conference second team. In her sophomore season, she led her team to the 2017 1A championship and was named MVP. In 2018, Hansen was named all-state second team. As a senior, she helped her team to a state runner-up finish and won conference MVP.
She plans to major in Business.
ALLANIS NAVAS | San Juan, Puerto Rico
"We are really excited about the signing of Allanis," Rohr said. "She comes to us with experience playing for the Puerto Rican junior national team and at a really high level. We loved the growth we saw from her from last year to this year. She is a great ball control player, fast and crafty defender. We expect her to make an immediate impact in our program"
Navas hails from San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she plays for the junior national team and is a libero for the indoor volleyball team at Piaguet Bilingual Academy. In July, Navas teamed with Maria Claudia Gonzalez Valentin to win the 18U Gold Bracket of the AAU Girls' Junior National Beach Volleyball Championships in Hermosa Beach, California. They also paired to finish second in 18U at the West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games this year and third in the AAU Girls Beach Nationals last year.
She will pursue a degree in Accounting.
MADISON BANTER | CROWN POINT HS | Crown Point, Ind.
"Maddie Banter is a hard-working defender who joins the Lopes this spring from Crown Point, Indiana," Rohr said. "She's a standout indoor and beach player from the Midwest. We are looking for Maddie to help our team in the coming years."
Banter, an Indiana native, will join the Lopes for this spring season. She is a National Honor Society student at Crown Point High School, where she also was a scholar athlete. In 2019, she was named
Post Tribune Volleyball Player of the Year and to the all-state team. Banter was named Dunes Athletic Conference MVP, along with being Crown Point's team MVP in 2016, 2018 and 2019. She won Server of the Year in all four seasons as a Bulldog. Madison was named All Conference and All District in her final two seasons and was named an Indiana All-Star. She also led the conference in kills in 2018 and 2019.
She intends to major in Criminal Justice.
