Grand Canyon beach volleyball announced its 2020 schedule, following a 2019 season with a program-best 20 wins.
"We are excited about our schedule this year," GCU head coach
Kristen Rohr said. "We continue to schedule the top teams in the country and are excited about hosting those teams at our home facility."
The Lopes finished 2019 with a 20-11 record and ended the season with a No. 14 ranking. This season's GCU schedule will include 12 other teams who finished in last season's top 20, along with four more teams that received top-20 votes.
The Lopes are hosting their annual preseason alumni match on Feb. 8, starting at 9 a.m. at GCU Beach Volleyball Stadium.
GCU begins its season on Feb. 22 when it opens in Moraga, California, where the Lopes will face Saint Mary's (No. 19 last season) and California (No. 10). On Feb. 23, the Lopes will remain in Northern California to face host San Jose State and Santa Clara.
The Lopes will welcome 11 teams to the GCU Beach Volleyball Stadium and play 17 opponents on the road.
"We believe our schedule will put GCU beach volleyball in the best position to make postseason," Rohr said.
GCU will travel to Hilton Head, South Carolina, to play in the Hilton Head Island Invitational, which includes South Carolina (No. 16 last season), USC (No. 2), Florida State (No. 3) and College of Charleston.
"We will be playing some top East and West Coast competition," Rohr said. "It will be an early test for us as a team and we are excited for the challenge."
For two weekends in a row, the Lopes will be at home. After a weekend set with Cal Poly (No. 8 last season), Houston Baptist and San Diego City College, the following weekend will bring Loyola Marymount (No. 11) and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Lopes head to Honolulu at the end of March for a tournament at Queens Beach with Hawaii (No. 5 last season), Nebraska and Washington.
GCU kicks off April with a mid-week matchup against Long Beach State (No. 12 last season) and then will host another home tournament over the following weekend.
On April 10-11, the Lopes will go to Tempe to play in Arizona State's tournament with in-state competitors ASU, Arizona (No. 13 last season) and Arizona Christian.
"It's always fun to face our in-state competition and continue to grow our sport in the state of Arizona," Rohr said.
The final week of the 2020 season includes a Wednesday match with Pepperdine and then the Lopes will finish their season with a match against two-time reigning NCAA champion UCLA.
