For the next two weeks, Grand Canyon can keep a holiday spirit about how it last played.
The Lopes concluded a difficult nonconference stretch with their easiest win, a 85-63 victory against Eastern Illinois at GCU Arena.
GCU (5-9) ended a three-game losing streak with its best all-around performance of the season, also ending the Panthers' three-game winning streak by holding them to 31.7% shooting.
Meanwhile, the Lopes came out blazing by making eight of their first nine tries from 3-point range, where they entered the game shooting 27%. That helped GCU open up a 33-14 lead in the first 11 minutes and Eastern Illinois (7-5) never put much of a serious threat as GCU built a lead that grew to its largest in the final minute.
GCU posted its highest scoring game of the season with three players scoring 16 points or more for the time since last season's WAC Tournament opener against Seattle. Following a 9-for-10 shooting game against New Mexico, Lopes junior center
Alessandro Lever made 10 of 13 shots (3 of 3 on 3-pointers) to score 24 points with seven rebounds.
GCU senior swingman
Carlos Johnson made his first four 3-point tries to send the Lopes to a big early lead and finished with 16 points, as did senior power forward
Lorenzo Jenkins off the bench in 18 minutes. In his first home game, GCU junior guard
Mikey Dixon scored 15 points on the Lopes' 46% shooting game.
