The Grand Canyon women's basketball team shot 56% in the second half and edged UNLV 53-51 on Monday night in GCU Arena.
After a shaky first half with 15 turnovers, the Lopes regrouped and connected on 14 of 25 field goals in the second half, including a 7-for-10 performance in the fourth quarter to defeat the Rebels.

Jada Holland led the way for GCU with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists. She scored 15 of her points in the second half, when the Lopes offense turned around for a 36-28 advantage.

Carla Balague (eight points, eight rebounds) scored six points in the fourth quarter. Senior teammateÂ
Da'jah Daniel added six points and 10 rebounds to help GCU outrebound UNLV 40-31 and hold Rebels leading scorer Rodjanae Wade to four points on 2-of-12 shooting.
UNLV was paced by Latecia Smith and Bailey Thomas with 12 points apiece.
The game started slow for the Lopes as UNLV scored the first 11 points. Holland hit a 3-pointer at the 4:14 mark in the first quarter for GCU's first points. The Lopes defense kept them in the game as GCU trailed 14-9 after the first quarter.
After trailing 23-17 at halftime, GCU started the third quarter on its own 11-0, half-opening run, capped by a pair of Balague free throws that put GCU ahead 28-23 with 7:43 remaining. GCU outscored UNLV 20-12 in the third period to give the Lopes a 37-25 lead.

Laura Piera found Balague on consecutive possessions to tie the game at 51-51 with 1:48 to go. Balague converted a pair of free throws with 1:09 remaining for a 53-51 advantage before GCU made two defensive stops on UNLV's final possessions to secure the win.
With the win, GCU improves to 3-5, while UNLV drops to 3-7.
GCU is back in action on Thursday when it hosts UC Santa Barbara.
