Despite a closely knotted conference match, the Grand Canyon women's volleyball seven-match winning streak came to an end Saturday at GCU Arena at the hands of WAC-leading New Mexico State.
The Lopes (21-5, 11-3 WAC) fell in straight sets to the Aggies (23-3, 14-0) by scores of 25-22, 25-20 and 25-22.
"I was proud of (senior setter)
Kayla Redfield for coming in and leading our offense to a .329 attack percentage," GCU head coach
Tim Nollan said. "We need to improve upon the defensive side of the ball against a quality opponent like New Mexico State.
"This was the first match in a while that we have been outdug by our opponent and it showed. We look forward to regrouping tomorrow and preparing for Monday's match (vs. California Baptist)."
The Lopes were paced offensively for the second match in a row by senior outside hitter
Melody Horton, who recorded 11 kills on .300 hitting. Horton also added seven digs with a block and an assist.
GCU junior outside hitter
Yeny Murillo added nine kills on .389 hitting while the pair of sophomore middle blocker

Murillo put down four kills in the first 12 points of the first set and the Lopes and Aggies were knotted 10 times before NMSU pulled ahead to claim the game, 25-22.
The largest deficit for the Lopes came in a 25-20 setback in set two after GCU cut the NMSU lead to just three points late in the set.
GCU and New Mexico State were tied, 19-19, for the 12th knotted score of the third set, but the Aggies used a 6-3 run to claim the 25-22 set and the match sweep.
