The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team broke the GCU Division I win record on Monday night with a four-set victory against California Baptist at GCU Arena.
The Lopes (22-5, 12-3 in WAC) secured their 22nd win for the first time as a Division I program after topping the Lancers 16-25, 25-18, 25-21, and 25-16. GCU is one of 18 programs in the nation with 22 or more wins this season.
Lopes senior outside hitter
Melody Horton had a stellar performance with 17 kills, a season high, and 15 digs, one off her season high. Three other GCU players tallied double-digit statistics offensively, including junior outside hitter
Yeny Murillo (15 kills), junior opposite
Sarah Hagge (13 kills) and sophomore middle blocker
Kaira Moss (12 kills). Sophomore
Annabelle Kubinski led all players with a .500 hitting percentage with eight kills. Freshman setter
Klaire Mitchell contributed 45 assists and gathered a season-high 21 digs.
"After a slow start, our offense was fueled by a great defensive effort," Lopes head coach
Tim Nollan said. "With 11 blocks and 68 digs, we will be a very tough team to beat. We also had four players with double-digit kills led by Melody with another double-double."
CBU (12-15, 6-8 in WAC) went on an eight-point run with a hitting percentage of .368 to win the first set.
The Lancers went into the second set with the same momentum and led 8-6. GCU answered and used a 6-0 run, which included three Hagge kills, to take a 19-13 lead on the way to a 25-17 set win that evened the match.
The Lopes carried the energy into the third set with an early four-point run, when three consecutive Murillo kills put GCU ahead 11-8. Another 4-0 run later included two Moss kills for a 19-12 lead and GCU closed the set with .313 hitting to win 25-21.
In the final set, GCU's offense had an astounding .467 hitting percentage. Horton, who had six kills in the set, sealed the match with her last two kills coming on assists from senior setter
Kayla Redfield for a 25-16 finish.
"We came out wanting to make a statement from our last match's loss, and both the offense and defense stepped up," Horton said. "We pride ourselves in defense and it showed how our offense can be successful behind a scrappy defensive effort. The trust with everyone on the court is so strong and it makes playing very competitive and fun, which ultimately makes us, as a team, perform better too."
The Lopes finish the regular season at home on Saturday against CSU Bakersfield for Senior Day.
