RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The Grand Canyon women's soccer team fell 3-0 at California Baptist on Sunday.
Freshman goalkeeper
Lauren Garthwaite's performance was the highlight of the day for the Lopes, setting a new GCU Division I single-game record with 16 saves despite suffering a dislocated thumb in warmups and a broken thumb during the game. Garthwaite passed former GCU goalies
Abby Burton and
Blakely Fraasch, who each made 15 saves in a game during the 2018 and 2015 seasons, respectively.
GCU (3-11-1, 2-3-0 WAC) struggled to get the offense going with only eight shots in the game while two captains and other starters remain out with injuries. Junior midfielder
Haley Bostard and redshirt freshman forward
Dani Babb finished with two shots apiece while five other Lopes were able to get a shot on goal but not past CBU goalkeeper Romane Salvador.
On the other hand, CBU (12-3-1, 5-1-0) came out on the attack with 15 shots in the first half and a goal by Jordan Dow in the 18th minute. The goal came off a Garthwaite save that rebounded to Dow, who put the ball in the back of the net.
The Lancers sealed the game with two goals in two minutes, the last coming on a penalty kick by Karley Weeks in the 84th minute.
With the loss, the GCU remains at six points and in a three-way tie for fifth place in the WAC. The Lancers regained the WAC conference lead with 15 points, passing Seattle U.
The Lopes will be back home for Kick or Treat against Chicago State on Thursday at 7 p.m.
