LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Coming off of a momentous victory at UT Rio Grande Valley on Thursday, the Grand Canyon women's volleyball team ended the week with a split after a three-set loss to conference-leading New Mexico State on Saturday. GCU dropped the match by scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-16 at New Mexico State.
Both teams entered the match with 14-3 overall records, while the Aggies' 5-0 WAC mark was one game better than GCU at 4-1.
NMSU, which claimed its seventh straight win, was firing on all cylinders. The Aggies hit .347 for the match while holding the Lopes to 18 kills and a .039 hitting percentage. NMSU hit .081 better than any previous Lopes' opponent in 2019. GCU failed to hit over .100 for only the second time in 18 matches this season.
Lopes freshman setter
Klaire Mitchell had three kills, 10 assists and six digs, while junior outside
Yeny Murillo checked in with a team-leading six kills.
The Lopes fell victim to an impressive first-set performance by Aggies junior Julianna Salanoa, who entered the weekend with the third-best hitting percentage in the WAC. Salanoa compiled a 7-for-8 first set to pace the Aggies to a 25-18 win. Mitchell had a pair of kills and a pair of blocks for the Lopes.
GCU jumped out to a 3-2 edge in the second set, but NMSU used a 10-1 run to pull away. Service errors were a thorn in the home team's side, but the Aggies overcame for a 25-13 set victory.
In an effort to extend the match, the Lopes made a big push in the third set. GCU again got off to quick start with a 3-1 lead before a 6-0 NMSU run. The Lopes roared back after a block by freshman
Kailey Trapp to pull within two at 15-13 and force a NMSU timeout. The Aggies flipped the momentum and ignited another 6-0 run to put the set out of reach for GCU.
A season-long road stretch continues into California next week, when GCU will face CSU Bakersfield on Thursday and California Baptist on Saturday.
