OREM, Utah – Grand Canyon senior
AJ Cephas led the women's basketball team in points, rebounds and assists in Thursday night's WAC opener at Utah Valley (7-7, 1-0 WAC).
The Nevada transfer tallied 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the first WAC game of her career. Despite a close first half, the Lopes (2-9, 0-1 WAC) were unable to secure the win over the Wolverines and fell 57-46.
GCU junior Da'Jah Daniel also had a strong showing in the first game of 2019, scoring a season-best 10 points and grabbing eight rebounds against the Wolverines. As the third-highest scorer of the night for GCU, freshman
Laura Piera also made an impact with nine points and six steals.
The Lopes and Wolverines were well-matched to start the game with 10 lead changes in the first two quarters combined. GCU pulled ahead with 53 seconds to go in the first quarter, thanks to a layup from Daniel to put the Lopes ahead 16-15.
Both teams experienced their lowest-scoring quarter in the second, when GCU trailed to go into the second half 25-21.
Utah Valley extended its lead to start the third quarter, going on a six-point run in the first three minutes of the half. After gaining a 12-point lead over the Lopes, GCU battled back with points from Cephas and Piera to cut the Wolverines lead to eight heading into the fourth.
Cephas came out strong in the final quarter, scoring on an early fast break to drop UVU's lead to six. Daniel followed up with a layup to give the Wolverines their smallest lead of the second half. However, Utah Valley went on a six-point run to extend their lead back to 11 with 7:50 left to play.
After a layup from senior
ShaRon Miller and a three-pointer from Piera, GCU was back within six before going on a three-minute scoring drought. Shots from redshirt freshman
Taylor Howard and Daniel put the Lopes within single-digits twice before the end of the game, but GCU was unable to reclaim the lead.
The Lopes continue their road trip in Seattle, Wash., on Saturday when they take on Seattle U at 3 p.m. (MST).
