SEATTLE – Grand Canyon senior
ShaRon Miller made a game-winning 17-foot jump shot with 5.4 seconds remaining in the third overtime to give the Lopes a 74-73 conference victory on Saturday at Seattle.
With the Redhawks leading by one point, GCU freshman guard
Taylor Caldwell used a Miller screen to dribble left and kicked back to Miller at the top of the key for the game-winning shot. It topped off Miller's career-high 21-point performance at the Redhawk Center.
The evenly matched Lopes and Redhawks battled through a tight first half that ended with Seattle leading 33-32.
A four-point third quarter for the Lopes left GCU (3-9, 1-1 WAC) trailing by eight heading into the fourth quarter. The Lopes used five points from redshirt freshman
Taylor Howard, a 3-pointer from senior
Kavita Akula and a layup from Caldwell for a 10-0 run that put them ahead 46-44.
GCU outscored the Redhawks (0-15, 0-2) 14-6 in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. The pair found themselves tied again at the end of the second overtime, 64-64, before the seesaw finished with Caldwell defending a Seattle missed 3-pointer at the buzzer.
The Lopes are 2-1 in overtime games this season, as their last victory was in single overtime against Long Island-Brooklyn at home.
GCU returns to GCU Arena on Thursday to host New Mexico State at 6 p.m. (Phoenix time).
