CHICAGO – Grand Canyon women's basketball senior
ShaRon Miller logged her third 20-point game of the season season on Thursday night but the Lopes fell 50-48 at Chicago State on a buzzer-beating jump shot.
Despite Miller's and fellow senior power forward
AJ Cephas' 10-point game, the Lopes (4-11, 2-3 WAC) fell for Chicago State's first win of the season when the Cougars inbounded with 2.2 seconds and junior forward Alexandria Cliff made an 18-foot jumper to break the tie.
Miller has scored 20 or more points in three of the Lopes' five conference matchups, including her career-high 24-point game Saturday in a loss to Texas-Rio Grande Valley. Cephas has also been an important contributor in WAC play, scoring in double digits in four of the Lopes' five conference games.
The Lopes started the game strong, leading for the majority of the first quarter. Cephas and Miller contributed to GCU's six points in the period, but the Cougars hit back-to-back shots to end the quarter with a three-point lead.
Cephas and Miller continued to contribute in the second quarter, earning eight of the Lopes' 11 points, and GCU battled back in the third quarter to outscore Chicago State 18-16 and close the gap to five entering the fourth quarter.
The Lopes were able to regain a one-point lead with a shot from freshman point guard
Laura Piera with 5:50 to go but they were unable to maintain it after a 7-2 run by the Cougars.
Miller racked up six more points in a thrilling fourth quarter, where the Lopes tied the game three times. Senior guard
Kavita Akula pulled GCU even with Chicago State with less than two minutes to play.
A jump ball gave the Cougars possession with 17.7 seconds on the clock and the game tied. Cephas was able to swat the ball back out of bounds, leaving Chicago State with only 2.2 seconds to secure the game.
The Lopes continue on the road with a Saturday game at Kansas City at 1 p.m. (Phoenix time).
