NEWARK, Del. – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team came up short against Delaware in a 25-16, 25-21, 25-23 loss Friday in the Blue Hen Invitational.
GCU was led by freshman outside hitter
K.J. Adams with eight kills and 11 digs, while freshman middle blocker
Annabelle Kubinski finished with eight kills and two blocks.
Lopes freshman middle blocker
Kaira Moss added seven kills and three blocks, while junior middle blocker
Melody Horton chipped in with six kills and nine digs.
GCU sophomore setter
Molly Feldmeth recorded 24 assists and sophomore libero
Teagan DeFalco added 15 digs.
The Blue Hens were led by Maria Bellinger with 19 kills.
Delaware jumped out to a 14-7 advantage to open the match. After an Adams kill pulled GCU within 16-12, the Blue Hens pulled away for a 25-16 win.
Midway through the second set, GCU was hitting .333 but Delaware held a 14-10 lead. The Lopes came within three points late in the second set but the Blue Hens won 25-21.
GCU scored seven of the first 10 points of the third set after back-to-back kills by Adams. The Lopes led 17-12 after a kill by Horton. Delaward scored five straight points to tie the set at 21-21. The Blue Hens ended the match scoring four of the next six points to win 25-23.
Delaware outhit the Lopes .244 to .162 and served up eight aces.
GCU is back in action on Saturday when it takes on Marist in its tournament finale.
