LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team fell to New Mexico State 25-15, 25-23, 25-16 on Saturday afternoon at the Pan American Center.
With the loss, GCU drops to 7-8 (0-3 WAC) while NMSU improves to 12-5 (2-2 WAC).
Freshman middle blocker
Kaira Moss led GCU with eight kills (.462 hitting) and four blocks. Outside hitters
K.J. Adams and
Melody Horton added seven kills apiece. Sophomore
Sarah Hagge chipped in with six kills.
NMSU was led by Megan Hart with 13 kills (.706) and five blocks. Tatyana Battle finished with 10 kills and four digs.
The Aggies outhit the Lopes .350 to .174 in the match.
NMSU took a 10-5 lead in the first set. GCU pulled within 11-9 after a block by Hagge and Moss. NMSU controlled the set and finished on a 14-5 run to win 25-15. The Aggies outhit the Lopes .290 to .033.
Horton tied the second set at 9-9 with a kill. The Aggies led 21-16 but an
Annabelle Kubinski block and Hagge kill pulled GCU within 21-18. GCU rallied to cut the deficit to 24-23 but NMSU closed out a 25-23 win.
In the third set, sophomore libero
Teagan DeFalco tied the set at 9-9 with a service ace. NMSU led 15-12 at the media timeout. The Aggies proved too tough the rest of the way and won 25-16.
GCU is back in action on Thursday night when it takes on California Baptist in Riverside, Calif.
