RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team dropped a 25-21, 25-20, 16-25, 25-19 conference match at California Baptist on Thursday night.
GCU was led by its middle blockers, redshirt freshman
Kaira Moss and freshman
Annabelle Kubinski, who each recorded 12 kills. Junior outside hitter
Melody Horton narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs. Sophomore setter
Molly Feldmeth recorded 39 assists and seven digs. Sophomore libero
Teagan DeFalco had a team-high 14 digs.
With the loss, GCU drops to 7-9 overall and 0-4 in WAC play while California Baptist improves to 12-5 overall and 3-2 in WAC.
California Baptist was led by Tesa Oaks with 20 kills and nine digs. Summer Avery chipped in with 15 digs and six blocks.
In the first set, GCU took the first two-point lead of the match at 9-7 after an ace by sophomore libero
Alyssa Chisholm. GCU used its first timeout when it fell behind 18-16. A kill by sophomore
Sarah Hagge cut the Lancers' lead to 19-18 but CBU held off the Lopes to win 25-21. CBU outhit GCU .212 to .194 in the set.
GCU took a 6-2 lead in the second set to force an early timeout. CBU went on a 5-0 run and then went ahead 12-9. Kubinski sent down a kill to pull GCU within reach at 18-16. The Lopes were trailing 21-16 but a run capped byfreshman outside hitter
K.J. Adams pulled GCU within two (21-19). The Lancers, however, pulled away and won 25-20.
The third set was all GCU as the Lopes hit at a .324 clip and easily won 25-16.
CBU jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the fourth set. GCU did not go away quietly and pulled within 11-10 after a CBU error. The Lancers responded to lead 18-14 and forced GCU to use its final timeout. CBU was too much down the stretch and defeated GCU 25-19.
GCU is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Utah Valley in a WAC matchup at GCU Arena.
