The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team dropped a 25-13, 25-22, 25-19 conference match to Utah Valley on Saturday at GCU Arena.
Utah Valley's strong blocking limited GCU (7-10, 0-5 WAC) to 31 kills, a team-high 10 of which came from senior outside hitter
Melody Horton. The Wolverines (10-9, 2-4 WAC) posted 16 blocks, limiting the Lopes to a .042 attacking percentage.
Sophomore libero
Teagan DeFalco led GCU with 15 digs. Horton added 10 digs to post her double-double of the season and first since Aug. 31.
The Wolverines used 11 kills from Kazna Tarawhiti to pace the visitors to 38 total kills and an attacking percentage of .231.
GCU scored the first two points of the match on a kill from freshman middle blocker
Annabelle Kubinski and a Wolverines attacking error but a 5-1 Utah Valley run made the score 9-5. Setter Jaysa Funk Stratton served the final eight Utah Valley points to take the first set 25-13.
The two squads dealt back-and-forth blows in the second set. Utah Valley went on a five-point run when the score read 6-6 before GCU rattled off its own five-point run to tie the set at 11. The Lopes and Wolverines were tied at 22 before two kills from Tarawhiti sandwiched by a Lopes attacking error to give the visitors a 2-0 set advantage.
The third set started neck and neck before a four-point Wolverine run put the visitors ahead 14-11. A kill from junior middle blocker
Maria Adams pulled the Lopes within two points at 15-13, but Utah Valley scored 10 of the final 16 points to take the set 25-19.
GCU will stay in Phoenix to take on CSU Bakersfield on Thursday at 6 p.m. in GCU Arena.
