The Grand Canyon athletic department strives to have top-25 national programs.
Its men's basketball crowds are already there. In a ranking of the best college basketball arena atmospheres, bustingbrackets.com put
GCU Arena at No. 22 in the nation ahead of No. 23 Arkansas' Bud Walton Arena, No. 24 Penn's The Palestra and No. 25 Arizona's McKale Center.
"This crowd atmosphere has proven that it is one of the best nationwide in a hurry," the FanSided site wrote. "Regardless of the opponent, students and alumni show up in droves to watch GCU play. Seriously, this is without a doubt a premier mid-major destination to watch a game."
Midnight Madness set
The men's basketball team's official practices began Wednesday but the real feel of the season's start will come Oct. 5, when Midnight Madness will fill GCU Arena again to introduce the 2018-19 versions of the men's and women's basketball teams.
Following last year's pirate theme, the GCU Havocs Twitter account has given hints of a possible theme with tweets showing Batman symbols and Joker cards.
The new standard
Senior forward
Gerard Martin has one program record that will be difficult to beat – consecutive 1-mile time trial victories.
Each season, the Lopes take to the GCU track for a preseason 1-mile conditioning test. For a fourth consecutive year, Martin crossed the finish line first. A newcomer, senior transfer guard
Trey Drechsel, was the one pressing Martin this year. Martin did not top the record he set last year at 4 minutes and 50 seconds but he did enough to keep the race's "Martin Mile" nickname in tact.
Returning to 1580 AM The Fanatic
GCU extended its partnership with 1580 AM The Fanatic to broadcast all home and away games with play-by-play announcer Michael Potter and analyst Tom Kuyper returning. The pregame shows and games also can be heard on 99.3 FM and 95.9 FM.
By the numbers
The new roster is in place and so are the jersey numbers. Among the returners, only
Damari Milstead has made a change – switching from No. 10 to No. 11.
The numbers on scholarship newcomers are No. 0 for
J.J. Rhymes, No. 1 for
Isiah Brown, No. 2 for Drechsel, No. 23 for
Carlos Johnson, No. 24 for
Tim Finke and No. 43 for
Michael Finke.
Majerle 2K
GCU head coach
Dan Majerle passed the 2,000-day milestone on the job this month. The Phoenix Suns legend has been the Lopes head coach for nearly a full year longer than he served as a Suns assistant coach.
His five Lopes teams have a cumulative record of 103-58 (.640). Majerle has led GCU to the 28
th-most wins (71) in Division I over the past three seasons.
