GCU offense struggles to ignite
MANOA, Hawaii – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team came out strong against Hawaii at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium but a talented Hawaii lineup matched the GCU intensity and topped the Lopes, 4-0, on Sunday night.
The Lopes (3-9) were paced offensively by senior midfielder McKenzie Cook and sophomore forward Camryn Larson, who each tallied a pair of shots on the night. Senior Kelsey Smith, freshman Noah Johnson and junior Andrea Martinez added a shot each as well.
Hawaii (5-3-1) got on the board first with a penalty kick goal in the 18th minute after the Lopes fouled in the box. The Rainbow Wahine followed it with a cross ball to a header for a second goal in the 20th minute.
Hawaii added a third goal in the 50th minute with a shot from outside with 18-yard box sailing over Lopes senior goalkeeper Abby Burton's reach.
GCU was unable to answer the offensive pressure of the Rainbow Wahine, as Hawaii slotted a shot past Burton on a breakaway for the final goal.
The Lopes begin WAC play on Sunday, Sept. 30, at Seattle U at 1 p.m.
