TULSA, Okla. — Grand Canyon freshman midfielder
Marios Andreou netted his first collegiate goal, but the Lopes allowed three unanswered scores in a 3-1 loss at Oral Roberts on Monday night.
GCU's typically stout defense allowed more than one goal in a game for the first time this season. The Golden Eagles (5-2-1) scored in the 33rd, 58th and 63rd minutes to erase the Lopes' early advantage.
Less than 10 minutes into the match, Andreou took advantage of a mistouch by the Golden Eagles' goalkeeper. The ball slipped through the keeper's hands, and Andreou collected the misplay and cleaned things up in the box with an easy goal on an open net.
Andreou joined forwards
Calvin Kissi and
Jaime Delor as the Lopes who have recorded their first GCU goal this season.
The Lopes (3-3) held a 1-0 advantage for more than 20 minutes before Oral Roberts found the equalizer. A pair of Golden Eagles forwards penetrated deep into the box and a late cross from center to left ended in a Dante Brigida goal.
Oral Roberts claimed the lead on a Javier Palero header off a corner in the 58th minute. The Golden Eagles extended their lead when Junior Chavez cut through the GCU defense and scored from near the goal.
The Golden Eagles held the shots advantage 17-10 and had 13 corner kicks compared to just four for the Lopes.
Josh Drack again presented some of GCU's best scoring opportunities, taking a team-high three shots with two on target.
GCU returns to action on Thursday, when the Lopes host Akron at GCU Stadium at 7 p.m.
