The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team (2-1) hosts the GCU Invitational this week, welcoming Southern Utah (0-3), Jacksonville State (3-1) and Boston College (3-0).
Last week, GCU played a trio of five-set matches. The Lopes defeated New Mexico and Santa Clara, while coming up short against host Idaho. GCU's
Teagan DeFalco and
Kaira Moss were named to the Idaho Volleyball Classic All-Tournament team.
Kayla Matthews enters the week leading the Lopes with 2.71 kills per set and a team-high five service aces.
Melody Horton averages 2.40 kills per set.
Annabelle Kubinski leads GCU with a .260 hitting percentage and one block per set.
Kayla Redfield averages nine assists per set while DeFalco leads GCU with 4.87 digs per set.
Last year's home opener against Fordham drew a school-record crowd of 2,504 fans in GCU Arena.
Southern Utah opened the year at the UNLV Invitational, falling to Long Island-Brooklyn, Nevada-Las Vegas and Indiana. Janet Kalaniuvalu leads Southern Utah with 3.11 kills per set. Anna Hopkins hits at a team-high .281 clip with Miahna Waters averaging a team-best 4.33 digs per set.
Jacksonville State opened the year with wins against North Alabama, Lamar and Mercer, while falling to Little Rock at the Jax State Invitational. Jacksonville State is led by Sadie Anderson with 2.85 kills per set. Lexie Libs hits at a team-high .438 clip while Kaylie Milton leads the Gamecocks with 2.92 digs per set.
Boston College won the Boston College Invitational defeating Hartford, Providence and Sacred Heart. McKenna Goss leads BC with 3.10 kills per set while Cat Balido adds 2.80 kills per set. Amaka Chukwujekwu leads BC with 1.40 blocks per set while Makenzie Morrison adds a team-high 4.90 digs per set.
After this week, the Lopes will head to the Blue Hen Invitational at Delaware.
