Grand Canyon will get an early start on its to-do list for the 2018-19 basketball season.
The retooled Lopes will take an international preseason trip to the Bahamas to get a jump on the regular season with three preseason games against Bahamian clubs and opportunities for additional practice and bonding time.
Because of the foreign tour, GCU is allowed 10 extra days of practice on campus and will start using those during the first week of August. The Lopes will have an Aug. 18-24 trip to Nassau and return to GCU before the start of fall classes.
"This is a valuable opportunity for everyone in our program," Lopes head coach
Dan Majerle said. "For the returners, it is a chance to have a transition from our summer skill training work to game play. The summer is a great chance for players to make a leap of improvement so we'll get a chance to see how their hard work will pay off. With our new guys, it will be great to see them on the court with our team and in our system for the first time. They will benefit from the playing experience as they learn how we play and we learn more about them."
GCU went on a foreign trip last year to Spain with scheduled games in Barcelona and Marbella. NCAA teams are permitted to take a preseason international trip once every four years but the NCAA granted GCU's request for another one this year because the Lopes did not go to Marbella last year and returned early from Barcelona after a terrorist attack on Las Ramblas.
The Bahamas trip is popular annually among top college basketball programs. Complete Sports Management will arrange the tour for GCU, as well as top programs like Kentucky, North Carolina and Notre Dame. The trip director, Lea Miller-Tooley, also produces Battle 4 Atlantis, an annual Thanksgiving break tournament that features college powerhouses.
In addition to Aug. 19, 21 and 22 night games at 2,500-seat Sir Kendal G.L. Isaacs Gymnasium, the Lopes also will have cultural tours of the island in addition to practices and game-day shootarounds.
This year's GCU player roster features seven returning players from last season's 22-12 team and six newcomers, as well as the addition of new associate head coach Louis Wilson.
"With so many new players, it will be a great chance for our guys to get to know each other better on and off the court," Majerle said. "They will get to see a new part of the world and build some bonds that can carry into the season."
