LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Led by four home runs and a 15-0 victory over No. 5 CSU Bakersfield (6-37, 3-12 WAC), the Lopes (28-26, 8-6 WAC) claimed their first-ever Western Athletic Conference tournament victory in dominating fashion on Wednesday afternoon at NM State Softball Complex.
The Lopes tallied one run in the first frame and went on to break things open in the second with nine runs on seven hits. GCU's pitching trio of
Yesenia Morrison (9-6),
Mariah Valencia and
Brianna Aguilar-Beaucage combined for a two-hitter over five innings of play.
"I'm really proud of the girls and the way they started our first WAC tournament," head coach
Ann Pierson said. "There weren't any nerves, they were more anxious to get playing again. After a few good days of practices and continuing to learn the lessons that we've learned along the way through the conference season, I'm so proud of them."
Sierra Smith got the Lopes on the board with a two-out RBI double to left field, sending
Loriann Olson to home plate in the bottom of the first.
Madelyn Dowdle started the bottom of the second with a free base after being hit, while
Kendsey Hill followed with a double and
Taylor Kaye was walked to load the bases. An RBI base hit from
Laynee Gomez gave the Lopes a 2-0 lead with no outs on the board.
With her second-career home run, Olson hit a grand slam to clear the bases and put the Lopes ahead, 6-0, in the bottom of the second.
Sierra Smith followed with an RBI single up the middle for a seventh GCU run.
An RBI groundout for
Shea Smith and an RBI base hit for Dowdle gave GCU a 9-0 advantage.
Bianca Boling continued the scoring in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to right field, her fifth of the year. Kaye continued the momentum with an RBI fielder's choice, sending Dowdle in for the 11-0 lead.
With her first collegiate home run,
Kaylee Dietrich nailed a pinch-hit yard ball to left field in the bottom of the fourth frame to give the Lopes an 12-0 advantage.
Niki Gonzalez drove a 3 RBI home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the fourth, her 13th homer of the season, to put the Lopes ahead, 15-0.
Olson, Gonzalez,
Sierra Smith and
Bianca Boling had two hits apiece, while Gomez,
Kaileigh Holland, Dowdle, Hill and Dietrich each tallied one. Olson led the way with four RBI, while Gonzalez had three and
Sierra Smith had two.
The Lopes move on to face No. 1 New Mexico State at 10 a.m. (MT) tomorrow in the second round of the tournament.
