LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Grand Canyon softball team started hot with a home run from
Bianca Boling, but the #4 Lopes (28-27, 8-6 WAC) fell to #1 New Mexico State, 10-2, on Thursday morning at NM State Softball Complex. The Aggies (27-22, 11-4 WAC) will play tomorrow, while the Lopes face #3 Seattle U in the tournament's first elimination game at 4 p.m. (MT) today.
"It's obviously disappointing," head coach
Ann Pierson said. "I thought we'd ride a little more momentum into today. I felt like we did a good job of getting people on base, but we just couldn't score.
"We've just got to figure out a way to keep fighting through."
The Lopes were led offensively by
Loriann Olson, who had two hits on the day.
Laynee Gomez,
Bianca Boling and
Madelyn Dowdle each tallied one.
GCU struck first with a solo home run in the top of the second from Boling, her sixth of the year and second of the tournament.
The Aggies followed up with a solo shot of their own and a 3 RBI home run to go ahead, 4-1, in the bottom of the second frame.
A pair of singles from Gomez and Olson and a fielding error on the Aggies loaded the bases for the Lopes, while a walk drawn by
Sierra Smith plated Gomez to bring the Lopes within two, 4-2.
NMSU tallied a 2 RBI home run in the bottom of the fourth and a 3 RBI homer in the bottom of the sixth to lead, 9-2.
