LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Four RBIs on two home runs from seniors
Bianca Boling and
Kendsey Hill accounted for the majority of scoring in GCU's 7-4 victory over #3 Seattle U on Thursday night, as the Lopes (29-27, 8-6 WAC) downed the Redhawks (33-23, 10-5 WAC), 7-4, in game five of the Western Athletic Conference tournament.
GCU's win ended Seattle's season at NM State Softball Complex, and the Lopes move on for another game tomorrow at 3 p.m. (MST).
Hill led the way for the Lopes with a 3-3 performance from home plate, four RBI, a home run and two singles, while Boling accounted for two RBI in a 1-3 performance with a yard ball.
Jordon Keeton tallied a pinch-hit RBI single for the last RBI on the game.
"It was a great fight to come back once they went up on us, 2-0," head coach
Ann Pierson said. "We knew we were going to have to battle with the depth of their pitching staff.
"We had a couple hiccups here and there, but we were able to stop the bleeding," Pierson said. "That's been something we've been trying to do all year long. Clutch hits from Kendsey (Hill) to Shea (Smith) and Bianca (Boling).
"I'm just really proud of the kids for their battle and their fight, but we've still got a long road and we're going to take everything one day at a time."
Laynee Gomez,
Niki Gonzalez,
Sierra Smith, and
Shea Smith each tallied base hits in the victory.
Seattle U got on the board first with a 2 RBI home run to left field in the top of the first.
The Lopes didn't even the score until the bottom of the fourth frame, when Hill hit a two-out 2 RBI single line drive to left field to send pinch runners
Katelyn Acton and
Taylor Tetone home.
Keeton continued the momentum with an RBI single up the middle to plate
Shea Smith for the 3-2 lead.
With her seventh home run of the season, Boling nailed a 2 RBI home run to right field in the bottom of the fifth. The yard ball was her second of the day and third of the tournament, as the first came in this morning's game against New Mexico State.
Hill continued her hot bat and followed with a 2 RBI home run to far left field in the bottom of the sixth frame to put the Lopes ahead, 7-4. GCU would not surrender the lead, as right-hander
Brianna Aguilar-Beaucage (11-15) dished her one and only strikeout to the final Redhawks batter for the win.
GCU continues on tomorrow at 3 p.m. (MST) and will play the winner of today's nightcap between #2 Utah Valley and #5 CSU Bakersfield.
