TUCSON, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon softball team concluded the 2018 regular season with an 8-0 loss to No. 10 Arizona (38-13, 11-10 Pac-12) on Sunday at Hillenbrand Stadium. The Lopes (27-26, 8-6 WAC) open the postseason Wednesday with a first-round game in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Shea Smith,
Laynee Gomez and
Madelyn Dowdle tallied base hits for the Lopes in the loss, while
Mariah Valencia dished two strikeouts in four innings of play.
Arizona struck first with an RBI single to near center field in the bottom of the first. The Wildcats continued with a two-run single up the middle to go ahead, 3-0.
GCU tallied a pair of back-to-back base hits from
Laynee Gomez and
Madelyn Dowdle to start the second but couldn't get anything going beyond that.
A bases-loaded walk put the Wildcats ahead, 4-0, in the bottom of the second.
Gomez got on base again after a fielding error from the Wildcats and she used a wild pitch to advance to third in the top of the fourth, but the GCU offense stopped there.
Arizona used a two-run home run to left field to go ahead, 6-0, in the bottom of the fourth. The Wildcats ended the game with a two-run single to right field for the 8-0 victory.
The Lopes open the first postseason play in the history of the GCU softball program with a first-round matchup against fifth-seeded CSU Bakersfield in the WAC Tournament on Wednesday. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m. (MST).
