THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- STREAKING: GCU has won five consecutive games and 10 of its last 11. The wins were coming at a rapid pace as it was the first time GCU has won five games in a six-day span since March 2013. At home, the Lopes have won eight straight games and 11 of 12.
Â
- WAC HONORS: The Lopes had a pitcher win WAC Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this season as Mick Vorhof claimed the honor. The senior closer appeared in three games over the course of the five-game week, and he recorded a save in all three appearances. Vorhof tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just one hit and now walks. He's the first GCU pitcher to earn a save in three straight outings since GCU's transition back to Division I in 2014.
Â
- THE 200 CLUB: Head Coach Andy Stankiewicz recorded his 200th career victory last weekend as the Lopes swept Utah Valley.
Â
SCOUTING
Arizona has won seven of its last eight games. The Wildcats pitching staff features a 2.80 ERA, a mark that ranks eighth nationally. Arizona ranks No. 12 nationally in on-base percentage at .403. Like the Lopes, Arizona has hit a lot of triples in 2018. The Wildcats are one behind GCU with 12 on the year. In fact, all three of Arizona's Division I baseball teams (including Arizona State) rank in the nation's top 12 in triples.
Arizona is 2-0 against the WAC this season, taking down New Mexico State twice at home by scores of 5-4 and 14-0.
Last weekend, Arizona picked up a momentous series victory against No. 4 Oregon State, winning Games 2 and 3 after dropping the series opener. The Wildcats scored four times in the final two frames, including a walk-off run in the ninth inning, to top Oregon State in the rubber game and claim the series.
In the first meeting between the two squads in Tucson last season, the Lopes limited then-No. 13 Arizona to just one run of scoring. However, it was a three-run inning that proved to be enough for Arizona to steal a 3-2 win. In the second meeting,
Ian Evans had a 3-for-3 night but the Wildcats outlasted GCU 7-3. Arizona posted 11 hits compared to eight for GCU.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
- The Lopes won their 12th consecutive WAC series by sweeping Utah Valley. GCU's conference series win streak is the longest such streak in the nation.
Â
WHAT'S NEXT
- GCU heads out on to the road for six of the next seven, starting with a conference series at UT Rio Grande Valley this weekend.
